Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed earlier this month that the company plans to open up its global charging network to all EVs. For years, the CEO has talked about opening a huge Supercharging network to other electric vehicles. And, according to Elon, it will happen “later this year.”
“We’re currently thinking it’s a real simple thing where you just download the Tesla app, and you go to Supercharger. You just indicate which stall you’re in. So, you plug in your car, even if it’s not Tesla.”
said Elon Musk.
How will it happen?
Owners of other electric vehicles will be able to charge at a Supercharger station using the Tesla app, which is currently only available to those who have purchased the company’s products. A small new piece of hardware is going to be used to solve the problem. Musk says the company is going to start selling the Tesla-designed adapter between the car and the Supercharger. The adapter will allow non-Tesla vehicle owners to use the Tesla app and charge their vehicle with Supercharger.
Access for everyone
Tesla’s global charging network consists of approximately 2,500 stations housing 25,000 charging points. This includes over 600 “Supercharger” points in the United Kingdom and Ireland, which are currently only accessible to Tesla drivers. Opening the network to all EV models and brands would additionally boost the number of charging stations available to non-Tesla EV drivers. Expanding these numbers of publicly accessible charging points is crucial not just for EV owners. Currently, range anxiety prevents people from buying EVs, but this may encourage more people to switch from petrol and diesel to electric driving.
